How I keep Track of My Genealogical Research - A Work In Progress

Denise Levenick, The Family Curator, asked, "How Do We Keep Track of Our Research Progress."

I use this form and DropBox. A bit of a dinosaur with technology tendencies. It can be customized for the person and there is also a History of Place for all the places lived.

The button on the far right side of the blue bar changes the view to full screen.



Y = Yes, I have this information with a link or note in Source.
R = Research needs to be done with a link or note on where I'm headed in the Source.

Great form. Have you looked at EverNote?

How did you create that form? Is it in a MS product? (Word or Excel)

It looks like that form took some time to develop! Beauty and function in one noble document. I like it!

Do you use another checklist to record sources consulted and results? My addled brain has trouble remembering what I have already checked; the traditional Research Log again?

Yes, I have timelines, research logs and more. I'm working on a document that I intend to use in Bento for photographs.

Haven't looked at Evernote, but will. This was created in MS Word, but I've moved on and am looking to convert to Bento.

What I like about EverNote is that I can access it from my Cell Phone. That's just an added benefit.

I do use Dropbox for my research, but Evernote has become my electronic notebook.

My Droid on Version works well. Working on a Blog entry on FindGrave (Droid Ap) that I used over the weekend.

This conversation is very timely, as I've been rethinking how to proceed with my research in progress this past summer.

I am heavily influenced by a dear friend Birdie who passed away in May. Her research binders had two additional columns for each ancestor:

T = transcribed
A = analyzed

Then in her top loading sheet protector, she has the transcription on the first side, and the analysis on the second side, with the photocopy of the original document sandwiched in between.

Now I've been considering how to accomplish a digital version of the same.

I am beginning to experiment with Evernote.

I am so glad that you wrote on this topic, fM, and shared your research log. I keep returning to read the comments and get more ideas.

I've come to the conclusion that it just isn't possible to transcribe everything -- abstracts and extracts do have their place. I am going to add a column to keep track of just how I process the information, so I know if I need to come back for another look.

It looks as if I will need Evernote Pro to be able to use Pages. My new passion.
